Is a Used HPA Tank Safe to Buy? What to Check

Somebody's selling a tank and reg for half of new. An r/airsoft player bought one with a 2016 date, some dings, and 1000 psi still in it, then asked r/airsoft if it was generally safe. The short version: a used HPA tank is fine if its test date is current and the shell isn't damaged.

Is a used HPA tank safe?

Usually, if it passes inspection and is in date. The tank's dates and condition matter far more than who owned it.

Player report: the top reply, from a self-described engineer, said a damaged tank should be checked before use and that a fire department, scuba shop, or paintball shop can point you to a hydro tester. He also said aluminum tanks are "good forever" as long as they keep passing, while fiber-wrapped tanks have a limited life.

What do the dates mean?

There are two to find: the manufacture date and the last hydro test. ZDSPB's tank page says steel tanks get tested every five years, fiber-wrapped tanks every three or five depending on the DOT-E rule, and fiber-wrapped tanks retire at 15 years max.

Those are US DOT rules, so if you're outside the US, check your local rules before buying.

What damage is a dealbreaker?

Deep gouges, dents, rust, and chips that go through the gel coat into the carbon. Scratches in the clear coat are usually cosmetic. Player report: a paintball player said small chips are fine "just make sure they are not deep scratches or chips." If you're unsure, have it tested.

What about the regulator that came with it?

Get it looked at too. Player report: one reply in the airsoft thread suggested having the reg tested, cleaned, and rebuilt, because a slow internal leak can pop the burst disk. Our regulator creep post explains what a leaking first stage looks like.

Is it actually cheaper?

Sometimes not. Player report: in r/paintball's "Buying secondhand HPA tank + reg. Yes or No?", one player said many used tanks are listed out of hydro, so you pay for a test on top of the price.

Will it work with our adapters?

A standard paintball tank with a 0–140 psi low pressure regulator is what our product pages call for. Run near 120 and never over 140. A used high pressure output reg won't do that job.

Before you pay, read our HPA tank hydro testing post. ZDSPB's hydrotest page has the US retest rules in one place.
