HPA Regulator Creep: Causes, Risks, and Fixes

My HPA regulator seems to be slowly increasing output pressure on its own between shots. Is this normal, or do I have a problem?

No, that is not normal. What you are experiencing is regulator creep — a gradual, unintended rise in output pressure when the system is static. It typically indicates contamination, seat wear, or a failing dynamic seal inside the regulator body. Left unchecked, it can push your FPS over field limits, cause inconsistent velocity, or damage internal seals in your gun or adapter.
Common causes include:
- Debris on the seat: Microscopic particles (Teflon tape shreds, desiccant dust, machining swarf) prevent the poppet from sealing fully.
- Worn or deformed seat: The soft seat (often nylon or PCTFE) develops a groove from the poppet tip, allowing high-pressure air to bleed past.
- Damaged piston O-ring: If the main piston seal rolls or extrudes, high-pressure air bypasses into the low-pressure chamber.
- Over-pressurization: Running tank pressure significantly above the reg’s rated max input can deform internal components permanently.
Diagnosis steps: 1. Pressurize the system with the output disconnected (or gun degassed). 2. Watch the output gauge for 60–120 seconds. Any climb >5–10 PSI confirms creep. 3. Depressurize, remove the reg, and inspect the seat and poppet tip under bright light. Look for scoring, embedding, or deformation.
Fixes:
- Clean the seat: Use 99% isopropyl alcohol and a lint-free swab. Do not use oil on the sealing surface.
- Replace the seat/poppet assembly: Most major brands (PolarStar, Ninja, Redline, Wolverine) sell rebuild kits for $15–$30.
- Replace the piston O-ring: Use the exact durometer and size specified by the manufacturer.
- Re-torque the bonnet: Sometimes the adjusting spring pack loosens under vibration, shifting preload. Check torque specs in the manual.
