How to Ship an HPA Tank Without Breaking Rules

You sold your old bottle online and now you have to get it to the buyer. An r/paintball player asked how to pack and ship it after doing the same. Short answer: you can't just drop a charged bottle in a box, and before you ship an HPA tank you need to empty it and check the carrier's rules first.

Can you ship an HPA tank by mail?

Not charged, and the empty case is murky. Compressed air fits USPS Publication 52's Division 2.2 definition for nonflammable gases. It bars any container whose internal pressure tops 180 psig at 130°F, and a 3,000 or 4,500 psi bottle is far past that. The same section says empty used gas containers are mailable only under the same restrictions as when filled, because some residue might remain. Only new, never-filled containers go without restriction.

What about shipping overseas?

Pub 52 says all gases are prohibited in international mail. Read literally with the empty-container rule, a used bottle shouldn't go abroad through USPS at all.

How do players pack them?

Player report: replies in that r/paintball thread said to degas the tank completely, press the pin valve, and back the regulator off slowly to release anything left. Then wrap the regulator and threads in bubble wrap and pack the bottle tight in a sturdy box. Some said to remove the regulator and tape over the opening so dirt stays out. Those are player habits, not carrier approval.

What should I do at the counter?

Tell the clerk what it is. Hiding a pressure vessel in a box marked "parts" is how packages get pulled. UPS and FedEx run their own hazardous materials programs, so ask them directly before you print a label.

Should I ship the regulator too?

That's up to the buyer, but it changes nothing about the bottle. Our product pages say to run near 120 psi on a 0–140 psi low pressure regulator, never over 140, so whoever gets it still needs one that matches.

What should the buyer check when it arrives?

The hydro date and the bottle's condition before the first fill. Our post Is a Used HPA Tank Safe to Buy? What to Check walks through it, and HPA Tank Hydro Testing: What You Need covers retest dates. The gas section of USPS Publication 52 has the exact wording.
