HPA Fill Nipple Leaking? What to Check First
The tank holds air fine until you fill it, or it hisses from the fill port while you're gearing up. An r/airsoft player posted "HK Tank Fill Nipple Leaking?" with that problem. Short answer: an HPA fill nipple leak is usually a worn poppet o-ring or a thread seal, and both are cheap fixes.
Why is my HPA fill nipple leaking?
The fill nipple is a quick-disconnect male fitting with a small poppet inside that lets air in and keeps it there. ZDSPB's tank tech page calls these low maintenance parts that may need an occasional o-ring swap when they leak. A leak through the center points to that o-ring. A leak around the base points to the threads where the nipple screws into the tank regulator.
How do I find the leak?
Player report: replies in that thread said to brush soapy water over the fitting and watch for bubbles. Bubbles from the center hole mean the poppet seal. Bubbles at the hex base mean the thread seal.
Can I fix it myself?
Yes, if you're careful. Degas the bottle completely first; players in that thread stressed this before anything else. ZDSPB says the nipple usually comes off with a 7/16 inch wrench and the poppet is reachable from the back. Most piston-type poppets take a 6/70 o-ring and most seat-type poppets take a 6/90. On reinstall, ZDSPB suggests green wicking Loctite or Teflon tape. It says red often doesn't work and blue doesn't work at all.
What's the catch?
Over-tightening. ZDSPB warns that if the nipple goes in too far, the poppet can get stuck closed and the tank won't take a fill. Piston-type assemblies make that distance hard to judge. If you don't want to fiddle with it, ZDSPB says to hand it to your local shop. Player report: replies in the thread suggested a paintball shop with a tech too.
Why does it only leak when the tank is low?
Player report: an r/paintball reply said the poppet o-ring needs a few hundred psi behind it to seal, so a nearly empty bottle can seep from the nipple and stop once it's filled. If it leaks on a full bottle, it needs attention.
Does a leaking nipple affect my pistol?
Only by draining the bottle faster. The low pressure regulator still sets what reaches the gun. Our product pages say to run near 120 psi on a 0–140 psi low pressure regulator, never over 140. For keeping the bottle clean between games, see HPA Tank Storage After a Game, and if pressure climbs at the gun instead, read HPA Regulator Creep: Causes, Risks, and Fixes. ZDSPB's HPA tank tech page has the o-ring details.
