Using an MP5 HPA Adapter with a Drum Magazine
Question:
I want to run an HPA-tapped drum magazine on my gas blowback pistol (like a Hi-Capa or G-series) using an MP5-style adapter. Will this work reliably, and what should I watch out for regarding gas flow and feeding?
Answer:
Yes, this setup works well and is popular for CQB and speedsoft players who want high capacity without swapping mags constantly. The key is understanding that the MP5 adapter replaces the magazine’s base plate and gas route, feeding HPA directly into the magazine’s internal gas chamber. Since drum magazines hold significantly more BBs and gas volume than standard stick mags, they demand consistent pressure to cycle the slide fully every shot.
Regulator pressure is critical. Most gas pistols cycle reliably between 100–130 PSI, but drums often need the upper end of that range (or slightly higher) to overcome the heavier spring tension and larger gas volume. Start at 110 PSI and adjust in 5 PSI increments until you get consistent blowback and no short-stroking. Use a quality adjustable regulator — inconsistent output pressure causes FPS swings and feeding issues.
Feeding reliability depends on the drum’s internal spring and follower design. Some drums (especially clones) have weak springs that struggle to push BBs up fast enough at high ROF. If you experience misfeeds, try a stronger aftermarket drum spring or reduce your rate of fire slightly. Also, ensure the HPA line isn’t kinked where it exits the magwell; a 90-degree fitting often helps routing.
Maintenance tip: Lubricate the drum’s internal gears and follower track with light silicone grease every few games. Condensation from HPA expansion can accumulate inside — purge the drum after play by dry-firing a few cycles with the line disconnected.
