Troubleshooting HPA Adapter Feeding Issues
Question:
My HPA-tapped pistol feeds inconsistently — sometimes double-feeding, sometimes dry-firing. I've checked my regulator pressure and dwell settings. What else causes these symptoms?
Answer:
Inconsistent feeding on an HPA-tapped gas pistol usually traces back to the magazine-adapter interface rather than the engine tune. Start by inspecting the feed tube (nozzle) inside the adapter. A bent, burred, or oversized tube will misalign BBs as they enter the hop-up chamber, causing double-feeds or misfeeds. The tube should sit flush with the adapter face and have a clean inner diameter.
Next, verify the magazine release engagement. If the M4/MP5/X9 magazine doesn't lock up tightly, the feed lips can shift under cycling vibration, altering BB presentation. Primary Airsoft's adapters use a dedicated M4 magazine release; ensure the catch fully seats and the mag has zero vertical play. A worn or loose release screw is a common culprit — replacement spares are inexpensive and install in minutes.
Check the magazine's own feed lips and follower spring. Bent feed lips (common on polymer M4 mid-caps after drops) or a weak follower spring will starve the adapter. Test with a known-good magazine first to isolate the variable.
O-ring condition on the adapter's gas route matters too. A nicked or flattened O-ring leaks pressure into the mag well instead of driving the nozzle, resulting in low cyclic energy and dry fires. Swap the O-ring during routine maintenance; Primary Airsoft stocks exact-fit spares.
Finally, confirm magazine compatibility. The KWA MP7, KMP9, SMC9/GTP9, and KC02 KJW adapters each require specific donor magazines (M4, MP5, or X9). Running the wrong mag type guarantees feeding chaos.
