SSX23 / MK23 HPA Conversion: Worth It?

Question: Does converting my Novritsch SSX23 or Tokyo Marui MK23 to HPA actually improve consistency, or just add bulk?

Answer: For the non-blowback NBB platform, HPA is a genuine consistency upgrade — provided you accept the trade-offs. The MK23/SSX23 design relies on a gas reservoir inside the magazine. As you shoot, liquid green gas boils off to maintain pressure, but rapid fire cools the mag, dropping pressure and FPS. An HPA adapter replaces the fill valve with a direct line to a regulated tank, delivering near-constant input pressure shot-to-shot. Expect FPS deviation to shrink from ±15–20 FPS (green gas) to ±3–5 FPS (HPA).

The efficiency gain is real too. Green gas yields roughly 40–60 usable shots per fill before velocity decays. A 13 ci / 3000 psi HPA tank runs the same pistol for 800–1,200 shots at 1.1–1.3 J. No more topping off mid-game.

Downsides: you lose the compact, holster-friendly profile. A coiled airline and tank on a remote line or stock pouch add weight and snag points. If you play CQB and need a slick sidearm, green gas stays king. If you run the MK23/SSX23 as a primary — suppressed, long-barrel, 0.36 g+ BBs — HPA transforms it into a laser beam.

Primary Airsoft stocks a dedicated MK23/SSX23 HPA adapter at https://primaryairsoft.us/ that feeds standard M4, MP5, or X9 magazines, plus spare feed tubes, O-rings, and magazine releases. Pair it with a quality regulator (0–150 psi adjustable) and set 80–110 psi for ~1.1 J with 0.32 g BBs. Chrono after install; NBB hop-ups are sensitive to joule creep with heavy ammo.
