Nozzle Length and FPS Consistency in HPA

Why does my HPA pistol shoot at 320 FPS one shot and 290 FPS the next, even though my regulator is holding steady pressure?

Answer:

Inconsistent FPS on an HPA pistol with a stable regulator usually points to the nozzle-to-bucking interface. The nozzle length determines how deeply the nozzle seats into the hop-up bucking. If the nozzle is too short, it fails to create a consistent air seal; gas escapes around the nozzle tip before the BB enters the barrel, causing velocity to drop shot-to-shot. If the nozzle is too long, it can bind against the bucking or restrict the feeding lip, leading to double feeds or erratic air volume.

Most gas blowback pistols (Hi-Capa, G-series, AAP-01, MK23) tolerate a narrow nozzle length window — often within 0.5 mm. Aftermarket nozzles vary by manufacturer, and even OEM nozzles wear down over time, effectively shortening the sealing surface. The fix is verification: measure the nozzle tip-to-shoulder length with calipers and compare it to the platform’s known spec. For example, a standard TM-spec Hi-Capa nozzle measures roughly 21.5 mm; a WE Glock nozzle sits near 22.0 mm. Swapping to a correctly lengthed nozzle restores the air seal and eliminates the spread.
