M4 Mag Adapter Feeding: Solving Double-Feeds

Question:

My Primary Airsoft M4 magazine adapter on my gas shotgun keeps double-feeding or misfeeding. I've cleaned the mags and the adapter, but BBs still jam. What is the most common cause?

Answer:

Double-feeds with an M4 mag adapter on a gas shotgun (like the M870) are almost always a magazine geometry issue, not an adapter defect. The adapter positions the M4 magazine at a fixed height and angle, but M4 mags vary significantly in feed lip height, follower tension, and body width across brands.

First, verify your magazine brand. Magazines with taller feed lips (common on some polymer mid-caps) sit higher in the magwell, causing the nozzle to strike the second BB before the first clears the feed tube. Magazines with weak follower springs fail to push the stack up fast enough for the shotgun’s rapid cycling, causing the bolt to override the top round.

Primary Airsoft’s M870 M4 Magazine Adapter is engineered for standard-spec M4/MP5/X9 magazine dimensions. For best results, use metal mid-caps with consistent spring tension (such as standard PTS EPM or similar spec mags). Avoid extended "bullet" style followers or excessively wide polymer bodies.

If the mag fits tightly side-to-side, the feed tube cannot self-center on the feed lips. Loosen the magwell retention screw slightly — just enough to allow 0.5–1mm of float. This lets the adapter align naturally with the magazine’s feed lips during the bolt cycle.

Check the feed tube O-ring. A worn or swollen O-ring adds drag, slowing BB entry. Spares are available at https://primaryairsoft.us/ alongside replacement feed tubes and M4 mag releases. Apply a tiny dot of silicone grease to the O-ring groove, not the BB path.

Finally, confirm your BB weight. Heavy BBs (0.30g+) require stronger magazine springs to overcome inertia in the vertical feed tube. Drop to 0.25g or 0.28g to test if the spring is the bottleneck.
