HPA Tank Thread: Will Any Regulator Fit My Bottle?
Your reg died, or you found a cheap bottle, and you want to know if they'll mate. An r/paintball player asked "Are all HPA tanks standard thread?", meaning the spot where the reg screws into the bottle. For the HPA tank thread, most modern paintball bottles share one standard, but "most" isn't "all."
Are all HPA tank threads the same?
Most are. PowAir's thread guide says "Most modern paintball HPA bottles use a 5/8-18 UNF neck thread," and that a standard regulator and standard bottle are compatible at that point "in most cases." Carbon and aluminum bottles commonly use the same neck.
The guide says most, not all, so check yours.
Is the ASA the same thread?
No, and this trips people up. The guide says the regulator-to-marker side is the ASA, "typically associated with 1/2-14 NPSM threading," and it seals with the pin valve and an o-ring. A tank that "doesn't fit" may be an ASA or pin problem, not the bottle.
If it threads in, am I good?
Not automatically. The guide warns that matching threads don't prove pressure compatibility. The reg has to be rated for the bottle's pressure, and the output has to match what your gun wants. Low and high pressure regulators can look nearly identical.
For our adapters, the product pages call for a 0–140 psi low pressure regulator. Run near 120, never over 140. A high pressure paintball output reg on the same thread won't get you there.
What if it's hard to screw in?
Stop. The guide says not to force it, because a cross-threaded reg can wreck a bottle neck fast. Look for burrs or a damaged o-ring. Never pull a reg off a pressurized bottle.
Can I swap the reg myself?
The guide recommends qualified service when there's any doubt. A bad seat at the neck leaks, and our o-ring replacement guide covers seals on the adapter end.
Where does the line go?
Remote lines use their own fittings, separate from both the neck and the ASA. Your First HPA Setup walks tank to adapter. PowAir's thread guide has the full breakdown.
