HPA Tank Regulator Output Pressure Explained

What does "regulated output pressure" mean on an HPA tank regulator, and how do I know if I need a standard 800 PSI output or a low-pressure (LP) 300–450 PSI regulator for my airsoft setup?

The output pressure listed on an HPA tank regulator (e.g., 800 PSI, 450 PSI, 300 PSI) is the fixed pressure the regulator delivers into your line before it reaches your gun’s internal regulator or engine. This is distinct from the tank’s fill pressure (3000 PSI or 4500 PSI) and the final operating pressure you dial in at your gun’s regulator.
Standard Output (~800 PSI) This is the industry default. It mimics the vapor pressure of CO₂ and provides ample headroom for almost every airsoft engine and secondary regulator on the market (PolarStar, Wolverine, Redline, Mancraft, etc.). If you run a standard HPA engine in an AEG, GBBR, or use a typical pistol adapter with an inline regulator, an 800 PSI output tank regulator is the correct, safest choice.
Low-Pressure Output (300–450 PSI) LP regulators are niche items. They are only required when you are feeding a system that does not have its own secondary regulator and is designed to operate directly off tank pressure. The most common airsoft example is the classic PolarStar Fusion Engine (gen 1) run in "LP mode" without an external regulator block. Some older custom HPA taps or niche pistol builds also fall here. Running an LP tank regulator on a standard setup that expects 800 PSI input will starve the secondary regulator, causing velocity drop-off and inconsistency.
Critical Safety Note Never connect an 800 PSI output directly to a component rated only for LP (e.g., a bare Fusion Engine LP poppet or certain pneumatic cylinders) without a regulator in between. Conversely, do not use an LP tank regulator to feed a standard secondary regulator — it will not function correctly.
Bottom line: Unless your engine manual explicitly states "requires 300/450 PSI tank regulator output," buy the standard 800 PSI output regulator. It works with 100% of modern airsoft HPA engines and adapter/regulator combos.
