Airsoft HPA Tank Hydro Testing: Date Rules

I bought a used HPA tank and noticed a date stamped on the label. How do I know if it is still safe and legal to use at airsoft fields?

Answer:

The date stamped on your HPA tank indicates its born-on date (manufacture date) or its last hydrostatic test date. In the United States, DOT regulations require most composite-wrapped cylinders (the carbon fiber tanks common in airsoft) to undergo hydrostatic testing every five years. Steel and aluminum cylinders typically require testing every five years as well, though some aluminum tanks qualify for a ten-year interval under specific DOT special permits — always check the label markings (e.g., "REE 10Y").

To read the stamp: look for a series of numbers and letters arranged around a symbol. The month and year of the last test are usually prominent (e.g., "03 23" for March 2023). If the tank is past its test window, it cannot be filled at any reputable field or pro shop. Using an out-of-hydro tank risks catastrophic failure and violates field insurance requirements.

Before buying used, verify the tank has at least 2–3 years of valid hydro life remaining. Factor the cost of a re-test ($30–$60) into the purchase price if the date is approaching. Also inspect the tank for cuts, deep abrasions, or exposed carbon fibers — physical damage can condemn a tank regardless of the hydro date.
