HPA Tank Hot Fill: Why Pressure Drops After Filling

The field filled you to 3,000, and twenty minutes later the gauge reads a few hundred less. An r/paintball player asked why their 48/3000 tank "loses pressure right after airing up." Short answer: an HPA tank hot fill heats the air, and the reading drops as it cools. Usually nothing is broken.

Why does an HPA tank hot fill read low later?

Fast fills heat the air and the bottle. Hot air pushes harder, so the gauge reads high at the station, then settles as the tank cools. The New Jersey Scuba air fills page says the proper way to fill is very slowly so the heat bleeds off, but most tanks get filled faster than that. It says the cool-down typically costs about 10% of the pressure, so a bottle filled hot to 3,000 ends up near 2,700.

How big a drop is normal?

Player report: replies in that thread said a drop of roughly 300 to 450 psi right after filling is normal from heat. The fix they gave was simple: wait a few minutes and check again. If the needle stops moving, you're fine.

When is it a leak instead?

If the needle keeps falling over hours or overnight, the heat is long gone. Player report: a reply in a separate r/paintball thread about a 3,000 psi HK tank losing pressure over time pointed to the tank regulator needing a rebuild. Brush soapy water on the fill nipple, gauge and regulator joints to find where it's coming from.

Can I get a fuller fill?

Ask for a slower fill, or let the bottle cool and ask for a top-off. The scuba page notes that some shops will hold your tank and top it off later. Don't push past the pressure printed on the tank, and don't ask the fill station to.

Does it matter for my pistol?

Not much. A hot fill costs you shots, not consistency. The low pressure regulator still sets what reaches the gun. Our product pages say to run near 120 psi on a 0–140 psi low pressure regulator, never over 140. A 2,700 psi bottle and a 3,000 psi bottle shoot the same; the bigger one just lasts longer.

Does heat work the other way?

Yes. A bottle that warms up after the fill reads higher, which is the point of our HPA Tank in a Hot Car post. Airsoft Tank Safety: Testing, Fill Limits covers rated pressure. The New Jersey Scuba air fills page explains the cool-down.
