HPA Tank Cover: Do You Need One for a Pistol Rig?
You bought the tank, and now the shop wants another 25 bucks for a neoprene sleeve. An r/airsoft player asked "for a hpa tank, do i need a cover or something or can i just put it in a backpack?" Short answer: an HPA tank cover is optional. It protects the finish, not the tank's strength.
Do you need an HPA tank cover?
No. Player report: the replies in that thread were "Backpack is plenty" and "Just drop it in a backpack and call it a day." In an older r/paintball thread, one player said covers "dont really do much except keep your tank from getting scratched," and another said it "would take a lot to compromise the integrity of a tank."
What does a cover actually do?
Mostly it stops dings and scratches and quiets the bottle. Evike's listing for the HK Army Hardline cover says it "Protects your HPA tank from dings, dents and scratches" and lists neoprene padding with a rubber backing. That one "Fits 68ci-80ci air systems," so it's sized for bigger paintball bottles, not a 13ci pistol tank.
Match the cover's listed size range to your bottle before you buy.
Can I just wrap it in tape?
Careful. Player report: a hydro testing shop in r/paintball's "Does it matter if I cover my hpa tank in tape?" said the DOT label should stay visible and that fill stations can refuse a tank when it's covered. A zip-off cover you can open at the fill counter avoids that fight.
Any cheap options?
Player report: one airsoft player said he puts his tanks in socks so they don't clink against each other in the bag. Quiet and free.
Where does the tank ride with a pistol?
Usually in a pouch, a small pack, or on the belt. Keep the line routed so the pistol can come out of the holster without yanking the hose. Covers don't change anything at the regulator, which our product pages say to run near 120 psi on a 0–140 psi low pressure regulator, never over 140.
If a cover hides damage, take it off now and then and look. Our HPA tank hydro testing post covers what to check, and HPA Tank Storage After a Game covers the end of the day. The Evike listing shows a typical padded cover.
