HPA Regulator Mounting: Tank vs. Line
Question:
Should I mount my HPA regulator directly on the tank or run a remote line with the regulator on my belt?
Answer:
Both setups work, but they change how the gun handles. Tank-mounted regulators (often called "on-tank") keep the entire air system self-contained. The center of gravity stays near the rear of the rifle, which many players prefer for shoulder transitions and snap-shooting. There is no hose to snag on barricades, slings, or gear. The trade-off is added weight and bulk at the stock. If you run a minimalist PDW or a compact SMG build, a large regulator on a 13ci or 48ci tank can make the gun feel rear-heavy and awkward to shoulder quickly.
Remote-line setups move the regulator to a belt pouch or MOLLE panel. This strips weight off the replica, making the front end lighter and faster to swing between targets. It is the standard for Speedsoft and competitive players who prioritize maneuverability. The downsides are hose management and a potential failure point at the quick-disconnect (QD) fitting. A snagged hose can pull the regulator off your belt or yank the line from the gun. Quality braided line and a 90-degree QD fitting on the regulator mitigate this risk.
For GBB pistols converted to HPA, a remote line is practically mandatory; a tank-mounted regulator on a pistol is unwieldy. Primary Airsoft stocks HPA adapters for platforms including Hi-Capa, Glock/AAP-01, MK23/SSX23, KWA MP7/KMP9, and KC02, all designed to feed from standard M4, MP5, or X9 pattern magazines via a remote line setup. If you play both CQB and field, consider a quick-disconnect on the tank. You can run on-tank for milsim events where prone shooting stability matters, then switch to a remote line for indoor speed games without buying two regulators.
