HPA Pressure Creep: Causes & Quick Fixes

Question:

My HPA regulator gauge shows the pressure rising slowly after I set it. Is my regulator broken, or is something else causing this pressure creep?

Answer:

Pressure creep — where output pressure drifts upward after setting — is a common HPA headache, but it rarely means the regulator is ruined. The most frequent culprit is contamination. Microscopic debris, Teflon tape shreds, or desiccant beads from a poorly filtered fill station can lodge on the regulator's valve seat or piston o-ring. This prevents the valve from sealing completely, allowing high-pressure air to bleed past into the low-pressure side until the relief vent activates or the gauge spikes.

Temperature swings also mimic creep. If you set pressure on a cold morning and the tank warms in the sun, the gas expands and pressure rises. Conversely, rapid firing cools the regulator body, which can cause temporary pressure drops followed by a rebound as it re-warms. Always chronograph after the system stabilizes.

To fix true mechanical creep: 1. Depressurize fully — remove the tank and fire until empty. 2. Disassemble the bonnet/adjuster per the manufacturer's guide. 3. Inspect the valve seat and piston face with a bright light. Even a hairline scratch or speck of grit requires cleaning or replacement. 4. Clean with 90%+ isopropyl alcohol and lint-free swabs. Avoid oils on the sealing surfaces; they attract dust. 5. Reassemble dry unless the manual specifies a specific grease (e.g., Christo-Lube or Super Lube) for dynamic o-rings only.

Prevention beats repair: run a quality inline filter (sintered bronze or 40-micron stainless) between tank and regulator, and never skip the tank's own burst disk and filter checks.
