HPA Line Routing: Coil vs. Straight Hose

Question:

I'm building my first HPA-tapped pistol setup for indoor CQB. Should I run a coiled remote line or a straight braided hose, and does line length affect regulator consistency or shot-to-shot FPS deviation?

Answer:

For compact pistol primaries — especially Hi-Capa, AAP-01, G-series, or MK23/SSX23 platforms — a short straight braided line (24–30 inches) is almost always superior to a coiled remote line. Coils add 12–18 inches of extra internal volume, which creates a measurable pressure reservoir between your regulator and the adapter. That buffer smooths output slightly but introduces trigger latency and post-shot pressure droop during rapid strings, effectively mimicking a slower regulator response. In semi-auto CQB, where split times matter, that lag is tangible.

Straight lines minimize dead volume, giving you crisper trigger response and tighter FPS consistency — typically ±2–3 FPS on a quality regulator (e.g., PolarStar MR, Redline SFR, Ninja LPR) versus ±5–7 FPS with a 48-inch coil. They also eliminate the "spring effect" where a stretched coil yanks on your adapter or snags gear.

Route the line along your weak-side forearm, secured with a single elastic keeper or Velcro strap. Keep the regulator on your tank, not in a pouch — remote-mounted regs add fittings, leak points, and another 6+ inches of line.
