HPA Feeding Issues: Adapter Fixes & Tips
Question:
My HPA-tapped pistol runs fine for a few mags, then starts misfeeding or double-feeding. I've cleaned the hop-up and tried heavier BBs. What else causes this on a gas-to-HPA conversion?
Answer:
Intermittent feeding on a converted gas pistol usually traces back to the adapter interface, not the hop-up. When you replace a gas magazine's valve with an HPA adapter, you change how the magazine spring pushes rounds into the feed lips. Three specific areas cause 90% of late-session failures.
Feed Tube Seating & O-Ring Seal The feed tube must sit flush against the magazine body. If the adapter body rotates slightly under recoil, the tube lifts, creating a gap where BBs jam or the nozzle loses seal. Check the O-ring at the base of the feed tube — if it's flattened or pinched, the nozzle can't maintain consistent back-pressure. A fresh O-ring and a drop of silicone on the ring during reassembly fixes most drift.
Magazine Spring Fatigue Gas magazines use lighter springs than AEG mid-caps because gas pressure assists feeding. HPA removes that assist. After 2,000–3,000 rounds, the spring often can't overcome the adapter's feed-tube friction. Stretch the spring gently or swap for a stronger aftermarket spring rated for the mag body (e.g., TM Hi-Capa or WE G-series spec).
Nozzle-to-Hop-Up Alignment HPA nozzles are longer than stock gas nozzles. If the adapter's nozzle length doesn't match your hop-up unit's nozzle-entry depth, the nozzle either bottoms out (crushing BBs) or sits too far back (double-feeds). Measure from the magazine feed-lip face to the hop-up rubber's entry hole. Most Primary Airsoft adapters (https://primaryairsoft.us/) include shims or adjustable nozzles for Hi-Capa, Glock/AAP-01, G-series, MK23/SSX23, SSQ22, 1911, Beretta M9, CZ P09, CZ SP-01 Shadow 2, KWA KMP9, KWA MP7, SMC9/GTP9, and KC02 KJW platforms — verify the spec sheet before ordering.
Quick Diagnostic Run the gun upside-down. If it feeds flawlessly inverted, the issue is magazine spring or feed-tube friction. If it still jams, check nozzle alignment first.
