HPA Adapters and Holster Compatibility

Question:

I want to run an HPA adapter on my pistol, but I'm worried it won't fit in my Kydex holster. How do I know if my setup will work?

Answer:

Holster compatibility is one of the most overlooked factors when switching a gas blowback pistol to HPA. The adapter body replaces the magazine base plate and adds length—typically 15 mm to 30 mm depending on the platform and adapter design. That extra length often prevents the pistol from seating fully in a rigid Kydex shell molded for the stock magazine profile.

Start by checking the adapter’s listed "added length" specification. Primary Airsoft publishes this measurement for every adapter on https://primaryairsoft.us/, allowing you to compare it against your holster’s internal depth. Open-bottom holsters (common for competition and speedsoft rigs) usually accommodate the extra length without issue because the magazine well is exposed. Closed-bottom retention holsters, however, frequently require a custom shell or a different adapter profile.

Magwell adapters—such as those converting a Hi-Capa or G-series to accept M4 or MP5 magazines—add significant bulk to the grip frame. These almost never fit standard holsters and typically demand a dedicated race holster or a universal retention system like a Safariland QLS mount with an open muzzle.

The quick-disconnect (QD) fitting on the adapter also matters. A 90-degree elbow fitting sits lower than a straight fitting, potentially clearing the holster mouth better. If you run a straight fitting, ensure the hose exit path doesn’t snag on the holster body during the draw.

Before buying, measure your holster’s internal depth from the muzzle opening to the bottom retention point. Add 3–5 mm of clearance for the QD fitting and hose. If the adapter’s total length exceeds that number, plan on a new holster or an open-bottom rig.
