HPA Adapter Thread Standards: Understanding

Thread compatibility is one of the most overlooked aspects of building a reliable HPA system. Using the wrong thread type—or forcing mismatched threads—causes leaks, damaged components, and unsafe connections.

1/8 NPT (National Pipe Taper) is the most common standard on US-sourced HPA regulators, tanks, and remote lines. These threads are tapered, meaning they seal via thread interference and require PTFE tape or liquid thread sealant to be airtight. You will find male 1/8 NPT on most tank regulators and female 1/8 NPT on standard HPA lines and quick-disconnect fittings.

G1/8 BSPP (British Standard Pipe Parallel) is the standard for many European regulators (such as Wolverine, PolarStar, and Redline) and high-end airsoft-specific components. These threads are straight (parallel) and do not seal on the threads themselves. Instead, they require a captive O-ring, a bonded seal washer (Dowty seal), or a sealing face on the mating part. Never use PTFE tape alone on G1/8 threads; it will not seal reliably.

M5 (Metric 5x0.8mm) is a small straight thread found on compact regulators, manifold blocks, and some micro-line fittings. Like G1/8, M5 requires an O-ring or sealing washer for a proper seal.

Critical Rule: Never thread a male 1/8 NPT fitting into a female G1/8 port (or vice versa). While they may engage for a few turns, the thread angle (60° vs 55°) and pitch differ, guaranteeing a leak and potential damage.
