HPA Adapter Magwell Guide: Reloads & Fit
Question:
I want faster reloads on my HPA-tapped pistol or SMG. Will adding a magwell work with my Primary Airsoft adapter, and which magazine types actually fit?
Answer:
A magwell is one of the highest-return upgrades for competitive play, but compatibility depends entirely on your magazine interface, not the HPA engine. Since Primary Airsoft adapters (https://primaryairsoft.us/) replace the factory magwell housing to accept standard AEG magazines — M4, MP5, or X9 patterns — your magwell must match that specific magazine geometry.
M4 Adapters (Hi-Capa, Glock/AAP-01, MK23, 1911, M9, CZ P-09/Shadow 2, KC02, SMC9/GTP9): These feed from standard M4/M16 mid-caps or high-caps. Any polymer or aluminum M4 magwell designed for Tokyo Marui-spec receivers will fit. Popular options include the Action Army, Maple Leaf, or Angry Gun flared wells. They index off the M4 mag catch slot, so zero modification is needed.
MP5 Adapters (KWA MP7, KMP9, select KC02 builds): These require an MP5-pattern magwell. Options are scarcer; the classic choice is the B&T or Zenitco MP5 flared well, but verify the mag catch height matches your adapter’s feed tube. Some MP5 wells sit lower and may need shimming.
X9 Adapters (SMC9, GTP9, select Glock builds): X9 magazines use a unique front-locking lug. Standard M4 or MP5 magwells will not work. Currently, no aftermarket flared magwell exists for X9 pattern mags. Your fastest reload path here is practicing the "thumb-index" technique on the stock adapter housing.
Installation Note: The magwell secures via the adapter’s existing M4/MP5 mag catch screw. Do not overtighten — strip the thread and you’ll need a replacement mag catch from Primary Airsoft’s spares kit. Apply a drop of blue threadlocker on reinstall.
Pro Tip: Pair a flared M4 magwell with 110–130 rd mid-caps. They’re lighter than drum mags, feed reliably through the adapter’s feed tube, and the flare guides the mag home under stress. For HPA drum mag users: skip the magwell; the drum’s width blocks most wells anyway.
