Airsoft Hop-Up: What It Is & How to Adjust

Question:

What is a hop-up and how do I adjust it properly?

Answer:

A hop-up is a backspin mechanism built into airsoft replicas that applies reverse rotation to a BB as it travels down the barrel. This backspin creates the Magnus effect, which generates lift and counteracts gravity, significantly extending your BB's effective range and improving trajectory consistency. Without a properly tuned hop-up, your shots will drop sharply or curve unpredictably.

To adjust your hop-up correctly, start by firing several test shots at a flat target roughly 30 meters away. If your BBs are dropping too quickly, increase the hop-up tension by rotating the adjustment dial or wheel — typically found under the dust cover or through the magwell. If your BBs are flying upward or curving high, reduce the tension accordingly. Your goal is a laser-flat trajectory before the natural drop begins.

Always match your hop-up adjustment to your BB weight. Heavier BBs, such as 0.28g or 0.32g, require more hop-up tension than lighter 0.20g BBs. Upgrading your hop-up bucking and nub can dramatically improve consistency.

Fine-tune your settings during actual gameplay conditions, since wind and temperature can affect optimal hop-up tension. Patience during this process always pays off with noticeably improved accuracy.
