Answer:

Cold weather dramatically affects gas-powered airsoft guns because of one core scientific principle: gas pressure drops as temperature decreases.

GBB guns rely on liquefied propellant gas, typically green gas or CO2, stored under pressure. When temperatures fall, the liquid gas struggles to vaporize efficiently. This means less gas converts to vapor during each trigger pull, resulting in lower chamber pressure and a noticeable FPS reduction.

Green gas is particularly sensitive to cold weather. It performs best around 65-85°F (18-29°C) and can become nearly unreliable below 40°F (4°C). CO2 cartridges handle cold conditions better due to their higher stored pressure, but they still experience performance degradation in freezing temperatures.

Several additional factors compound the problem. Cold temperatures cause rubber seals and O-rings inside the magazine and bolt assembly to stiffen and contract, increasing gas leakage. A leaking magazine bleeds pressure before it can cycle the action properly.

Some practical solutions airsoft players use include keeping magazines warm in interior jacket pockets before use, switching to a propellant gas rated for colder temperatures, or transitioning to an AEG during winter events.

Understanding this limitation matters especially for players competing at fields where FPS limits are strictly enforced. Fields commonly in North America set limits around 350-400 FPS for CQB and outdoor play respectively, so a significant cold-weather drop could actually work in your favor safety-wise, though it will hurt your effective range and trigger response considerably.
