Fixing the AAP-01 Full-Auto Bolt Lock Issue
Question:
My Action Army AAP-01 locks back on the last shot in semi-auto, but the bolt stays forward when I empty a magazine in full-auto. Is my gun broken, or is this normal behavior?
Answer:
This is normal behavior for the stock AAP-01 and AAP-01C, not a defect. The pistol uses a magazine follower to engage the bolt catch lever. In semi-auto, the cycling speed allows the follower to rise and catch the lever reliably. In full-auto, the bolt cycles significantly faster than the magazine spring can push the follower upward. The bolt simply outruns the follower, stripping the last BB and returning to battery before the catch engages.
The fix is usually magazine-side rather than gun-side. First, verify your magazine spring has not fatigued; a weak spring exacerbates the speed gap. Second, ensure the follower moves freely without binding on the feed lips or spine. Some users lightly polish the follower channel or stretch the spring slightly (replace if overstretched) to improve response time.
If you have already converted the pistol to HPA using a drop-in adapter — such as the G-series/AAP-01 model available at https://primaryairsoft.us/ — the increased cyclic rate from higher pressure or a lighter nozzle can make the issue more pronounced. Lowering regulator pressure to the minimum reliable level (often 90–110 PSI for HPA adapters) slows the cycle enough for the catch to function consistently in full-auto. Additionally, confirm the adapter’s feed tube seats at the correct height; an overly long tube can alter bolt travel timing. A fresh M4 magazine release and intact O-rings on the adapter also prevent short-stroking that mimics a catch failure.
