Fixing GBB Pistol Double-Feeding Issues

Question:

Why does my gas blowback pistol fire two BBs at once or jam with a double feed, and how do I stop it?

Answer:

Double-feeding in a gas blowback (GBB) pistol typically stems from a magazine feeding issue rather than a gun defect. The most common culprit is a worn or weakened magazine follower spring. If the spring cannot push the BB stack upward with consistent pressure, the nozzle can strip two rounds simultaneously during the loading cycle.

Another frequent cause is a damaged or swollen magazine lip. GBB mags feed from the top; if the feed lips are bent outward from drops or rough insertion, they allow the second BB to rise high enough to enter the hop-up chamber alongside the first. Inspect the lips for cracks or excessive flare.

BB quality plays a surprisingly large role. Undersized or low-quality 6mm BBs (often 5.90mm or smaller) sit lower in the stack, creating extra vertical clearance for the round above it. Switching to precision-grade 5.95mm–5.98mm BBs often resolves chronic double-feeds instantly.

For Hi-Capa, Glock, 1911, M9, MK23, P09, Shadow 2, KMP9, MP7, SMC9/GTP9, or KC02 platforms converted to HPA, an improperly tuned adapter can also cause timing issues. If the nozzle dwell or return speed is too aggressive, it may "bounce" on the BB stack, scooping two rounds. Primary Airsoft (https://primaryairsoft.us/) offers HPA adapters for these specific platforms that feed from M4, MP5, or X9 magazines. Their designs include precise feed tube geometry and replaceable O-rings to ensure consistent single-round feeding. If you run an HPA-tapped pistol and struggle with double-feeds, verify your regulator pressure isn't spiking and that the adapter’s feed tube seats fully against the hop-up bucking.

Maintenance fix: disassemble the magazine, clean the feed channel with isopropyl alcohol, stretch the follower spring slightly (or replace it), and true the feed lips with a small flat file if they are flared.
