Fixing Feeding Issues on HPA Pistols

Question:

My HPA-tapped pistol double-feeds or misfeeds every few shots. I've confirmed the regulator pressure is correct for the field limit. What else causes this?

Answer:

Assuming your HPA regulator is locked to the correct output pressure (typically 100–130 PSI for most pistols), the culprit is almost always the magazine-to-adapter interface. HPA adapters replace the gas reservoir and valve assembly, but they still rely on the magazine’s original follower, spring, and feed lips to present BBs to the nozzle. If any of those components are worn, dirty, or mismatched to the adapter’s feed geometry, the cycle timing breaks down.

First, inspect the magazine feed lips for spreading or burrs. Even slight widening allows two BBs to jump the nozzle simultaneously. Clean the follower channel with isopropyl alcohol and a lint-free patch; old green gas residue mixed with BB dust creates a tacky film that slows follower travel. Next, verify the magazine spring retains enough tension to push the stack upward at the speed your cyclic rate demands. Weak springs are the number-one cause of "ghost" double-feeds where the second BB simply falls into the chamber because the stack didn't rise fast enough.

Lubrication matters, but where you apply it matters more. Light silicone oil (1.5–2.5 wt) on the follower rails only — never on the feed lips or hop-up bucking. Oil on the lips migrates into the hop-up, causing velocity swings and jammed BBs.

The tube length and inner diameter are calibrated per platform. Swapping an M4 tube onto an MP5 mag — or vice versa — misaligns the feed angle and guarantees misfeeds. Finally, chrono at your actual cyclic rate. A pistol that feeds perfectly at 10 RPS may double-feed at 25 RPS because the magazine spring cannot keep pace. Drop the rate of fire or upgrade the magazine spring to match your setup.
