Fixing Double Feeds in HPA Pistols

Question:

My HPA-tapped pistol double-feeds or rolls BBs out of the barrel. What causes this and how do I fix it?

Answer:

Double feeds and roll-outs usually point to a nozzle length mismatch or a magazine seating issue. On a gas blowback platform converted to HPA, the nozzle must protrude far enough to seat a BB fully into the hop-up bucking lips, but not so far that it jams against the bucking or prevents the slide from cycling fully.

First, verify the nozzle length. Most aftermarket HPA nozzles for Tokyo Marui-spec Hi-Capas, Glocks, and 1911s run between 21.5 mm and 22.5 mm. If you swapped slides or buckings recently, the stack height changed. A Maple Leaf or Nineball bucking sits taller than a stock TM unit, effectively shortening the nozzle engagement. You may need a +0.5 mm or +1.0 mm nozzle variant.

Second, check magazine catch engagement. If the mag sits 1 mm low, the feed lips sit below the nozzle centerline. The nozzle pushes the top BB forward, but the second BB isn't held down by the feed lip, so both enter the hop-up chamber. Tighten the mag catch screw or shim the catch with a thin washer. On metal frames, peening the catch hook slightly upward works.

Third, inspect the feed tube. A kinked or flattened tube restricts flow, causing the nozzle to "bounce" on the BB stack. Replace it if the ID shows wear.
