Fixing Double-Feeds in HPA Adapter Mags
Question:
Why does my HPA-converted pistol magazine double-feed or roll BBs out of the barrel, and how do I stop it?
Answer:
Double-feeds and roll-outs usually mean the magazine feeds BBs faster than the hop-up can grab them, or the nozzle fails to seat the next round cleanly. With HPA adapters — especially on wide-body mags like Hi-Capa, G-series, or SSQ22 conversions — three culprits appear most often.
First, check the feed tube. If it’s cracked, deformed, or the internal spring has lost tension, BBs stack unevenly and two jump the feed lip at once. A fresh feed tube restores consistent single-stack pressure. Primary Airsoft stocks replacement feed tubes for every adapter platform they sell (Hi-Capa, Glock/AAP-01, G-series/AAP-01, MK23/SSX23, SSQ22, 1911, Beretta M9, CZ P09, CZ SP-01 + Shadow 2, KWA KMP9, KWA MP7, SMC9/GTP9, KC02 KJW), plus M4 mag release buttons and O-rings so you can rebuild the feed path without buying a whole new adapter.
Second, verify nozzle dwell and alignment. An HPA nozzle that sits too far forward or rides crooked in the hop-up chamber will push the second BB before the first clears. Lower your dwell/FCU poppet timing just enough to cycle cleanly; many builds run 25–35 ms dwell on pistols. If the nozzle wobbles, replace the nozzle O-ring — another spare Primary Airsoft carries.
Third, match BB weight to hop-up tension. Running 0.20 g BBs with the hop dialed for 0.32 g leaves zero back-spin grip, so the second round rolls past the first. Chrono with your field-weight BB, then dial hop until the BB flies flat for 50–60 ft before dropping.
Last, confirm the magazine catch holds the mag at the correct height. A loose catch lets the mag sag, misaligning the feed tube with the nozzle. Tighten or shim the catch; Primary Airsoft’s M4 mag release spare solves this on their M870 M4 adapter and KC02 M4/MP5/X9 mag-well systems.
Fix the feed tube, tune dwell, match BB weight, and secure the mag — double-feeds disappear.
