Fixing Bolt Lock-Back on HPA Glock Builds

Question:

My HPA-tapped Glock locks back on an empty magazine but frequently fails to lock back on the last round, or locks back prematurely with BBs remaining. I've checked the magazine spring and follower, and they seem fine. What specific interaction between the HPA adapter and the magazine catch causes this, and how do I tune it?

This is a classic geometry clash between the magazine follower, the HPA adapter's feed tube, and the slide catch lever. On a green gas magazine, the follower rides high and pushes the slide catch up cleanly. When you install an HPA adapter (like the Primary Airsoft Glock/AAP-01 or G-Series version), the feed tube sits inside the magazine body, altering the follower's travel height and angle.

The most common culprit: feed tube length. If the tube protrudes too far into the mag well, it physically blocks the follower from rising high enough to engage the slide catch on the last round. Conversely, if the tube is too short or the O-ring seal isn't seated flush, the follower can tilt and catch the slide catch early.

Fix it in three steps: 1. Verify tube length. Remove the adapter. The feed tube should sit flush with the bottom of the magazine lip or slightly recessed—never proud. Trim the tube in 0.5 mm increments with a fine-tooth saw if needed; deburr the inside edge to prevent BB jams. 2. Check the M4 mag release lever. On the Primary Airsoft adapter, the M4 magazine release lever doubles as a follower stabilizer. Ensure the set screw is snug but not crushing the M4 mag's feed lips, which can torque the adapter body and misalign the feed tube. 3. Test with a loaded M4 midcap. Cycle the slide manually. The follower should push the slide catch up decisively on the last BB. If it hesitates, the tube is still too long. If it locks early, the tube is too short or the O-ring is unseated, letting the follower wobble.

Pro tip: Run a 0.28 g or heavier BB. Lighter BBs stack loosely, letting the follower dip between rounds and trigger a false lock-back. Heavier BBs maintain a solid column, giving the follower consistent upward pressure.
