Eliminating Magazine Wobble on MP5 HPA Adapters

My MP5 HPA adapter has noticeable side-to-side play inside the magwell, causing occasional misfeeds and an annoying rattle during movement. What causes this fitment issue, and how can I fix it without modifying the gun?

Magazine wobble on MP5 platforms typically stems from dimensional variance between the adapter body and the magazine well. Unlike AR-pattern magazines that lock via a straight-insertion lug, MP5 magazines rock into place using a front locking tab and rear catch. This rocking motion amplifies any lateral clearance between the adapter shell and the magwell walls.

Gen 2 and Gen 3 MP5 magazines (and their HPA adapter counterparts) also differ slightly in body width and rib placement. A Gen 3 adapter in a tight Gen 2-spec well may bind, while a Gen 2 adapter in a Gen 3 well often exhibits the wobble you described. Additionally, polymer magwells on clones (CYMA, G&G, Classic Army) flex more than metal VFC or LCT receivers, exaggerating play.

The non-destructive fix is shimming the adapter’s lateral contact points. Apply 0.5 mm – 1.0 mm adhesive-backed polyethylene tape (UHMW or “slip tape”) to the flat vertical ribs on the adapter’s left and right sides — these are the primary bearing surfaces against the magwell. Build thickness gradually; test insertion and lock-up after each layer. The goal is zero lateral movement before the front tab engages. Avoid shimming the front tab or rear catch notch; altering those surfaces changes lock-up geometry and can cause retention failure.

If shimming doesn’t resolve it, verify the adapter’s magazine catch notch depth. A shallow notch lets the catch sit proud, preventing the adapter from seating fully.
