Diagnosing the "First-Shot Drop" in HPA Pistols

Question: Why does my HPA-tapped pistol shoot the first BB significantly lower than the rest of the magazine?

Answer: This phenomenon—often called "first-shot drop" or "cold shot"—is typically caused by rapid expansion cooling inside the nozzle or adapter, not a defect in the hop-up bucking. When you fire the first shot after a pause, the high-pressure air expands rapidly from the tank through the regulator and adapter into the nozzle bore. That expansion absorbs heat (adiabatic cooling), chilling the internal surfaces. The first BB passes through this cold zone, losing a small amount of velocity because the denser, colder air creates slightly higher drag and the nozzle walls may momentarily contract. Subsequent shots stabilize as the system reaches thermal equilibrium.

A poor seal forces the regulator to dump extra volume, amplifying the cooling effect. Also verify your regulator’s refresh rate; a slow-recovery reg starves the first shot after a pause, mimicking a drop. Chronograph a 5-shot string after a 30-second rest—if only shot one is low, it’s thermal. If shots one through three climb steadily, check reg recharge speed. For green gas nozzles, the same physics applies but is masked by propellant phase-change cooling, which is far more pronounced.
