Diagnosing and Fixing Double-Feeding

Question:

My HPA-tapped gas pistol (Hi-Capa, AAP-01, or similar) is double-feeding or rolling BBs out of the barrel. I’ve confirmed the adapter is seated and the tank pressure is correct. What is the most likely mechanical cause, and how do I fix it without replacing the hop-up unit?

Answer:

Double-feeding in an HPA-converted pistol almost always stems from a nozzle-to-bucking seal failure or insufficient nozzle dwell time, not the adapter itself. When the nozzle fails to seat fully against the bucking lips, two things happen: the air blast escapes around the nozzle (causing velocity drop), and the next BB in the magazine is not held back by the bucking nub, allowing it to jump past the nozzle into the barrel alongside the first BB.

Diagnose in this order:

1. Check Nozzle Length/Protrusion: HPA nozzles (including the green gas nozzles sold at https://primaryairsoft.us/) must match the OEM spec for your specific slide/frame combo. A nozzle 0.5mm too short won't compress the bucking lips enough to hold the second round. Measure the OEM nozzle tip-to-base length and compare. 2. Inspect the Bucking Lips: Swollen, torn, or hardened bucking lips (common with green gas oil residue) lose their "pinch" on the second BB. Swap to a known-good bucking (Maple Leaf, Nineball) before chasing nozzle parts. 3. Verify FCU Dwell / Poppet Timing: If running a Wolverine SMP, PolarStar Kythera, or similar FCU, increase dwell by 2–3ms. Too-short dwell closes the poppet before the nozzle fully returns forward, leaving the bucking unsealed for the next cycle. 4. Magazine Follower Tension: Weak follower springs (common in extended mags) fail to push the stack up firmly against the bucking. Stretch the spring or replace it.

Pro Tip: If you recently installed a lightweight aftermarket nozzle (aluminum/Ti), the reduced mass may cause "bounce" off the bucking, breaking the seal momentarily. Revert to a steel or OEM-weight nozzle to restore consistent seating force.

Fix the seal, and the double-feed vanishes — no new hop-up chamber required.
