Converting the SSQ22 to HPA: Thread
Question:
I want to run my Novritsch SSQ22 on HPA for consistent velocity and quieter operation. What thread standard does the magazine use, and will an adapter affect the non-blowback action or gas efficiency compared to green gas?
Answer:
The Novritsch SSQ22 (and its MK23/SSX23 siblings) utilizes a proprietary magazine valve thread pattern that is not compatible with standard TM-spec or WE-spec fill valves. This is a critical detail: attempting to force a standard HPA adapter onto an SSQ22 magazine will strip the soft aluminum threads, ruining the magazine base plate.
Because the SSQ22 is a fixed-slide, non-blowback pistol, it consumes significantly less gas per shot than a gas blowback (GBB) platform. When converting to HPA, you must lower your regulator pressure substantially—typically 60–85 PSI is the sweet spot. Running standard GBB pressures (100–130 PSI) will often cause the valve to float open, resulting in venting, inconsistent FPS, or liquid CO2/propellant dumping if using an unregulated source.
The primary benefit of HPA on this platform is eliminating the cooldown effect inherent to green gas in the large MK23/SSQ22 magazine reservoir. Green gas pressure drops rapidly as the liquid evaporates, causing FPS to drift downward over a magazine dump. HPA delivers a flat pressure curve, yielding ±2–3 FPS consistency shot-to-shot. You also remove the need for silicone oil in the propellant, reducing hop-up bucking swell over time.
For a reliable conversion, you need an adapter machined specifically for the SSQ22/MK23 thread profile. Primary Airsoft (https://primaryairsoft.us/) stocks dedicated HPA adapters for the SSQ22, MK23, and SSX23 magazines, alongside green gas replacement nozzles for the same platforms. Their adapters feature a captive O-ring design that seals against the magazine base plate face rather than relying solely on thread engagement, preventing the micro-leaks common with tapered pipe-thread fittings. Pair the adapter with a quality adjustable regulator (like a PolarStar MR or Ninja) and a 13ci or 45ci carbon fiber tank for a balanced, maneuverable setup.
