Choosing the Right BB Weight
Question:
I recently converted my gas blowback pistol to HPA using an adapter. The tech at my local field chrono'd it at 320 FPS with 0.20g BBs, which is within our 1.14 joule limit. However, I want to run heavier BBs (0.30g or 0.32g) for better outdoor accuracy. Do I need to adjust my regulator pressure down to stay legal, and how does Joule Creep affect HPA pistols?

Yes, you absolutely need to lower your regulator pressure when switching to heavier BBs. HPA systems are prone to Joule Creep — a phenomenon where a gun fires a heavier projectile at a higher muzzle energy (joules) than a lighter one, even at the exact same regulator pressure. This happens because heavier BBs accelerate more slowly, remaining in the barrel longer and allowing the fixed volume of pressurized air to act on them for a greater duration.
If you keep your regulator set for 0.20g BBs and simply load 0.32g BBs, your muzzle energy will likely exceed the field limit, potentially disqualifying you from play. You must re-chrono with your intended game-weight BBs and tune the regulator down until you are compliant.
For HPA pistols, optimal performance usually sits between 0.28g and 0.32g BBs. These weights balance stability in wind with the shorter barrel lengths typical of pistols. Ensure your hop-up unit can apply sufficient backspin for the weight you choose; a Maple Leaf Autobot or Decepticon bucking paired with a suitable nub is a common upgrade path for HPA builds.
